Svampkompassen
Introducing a New Approach to Mushroom Identification
With its initial concept in 2018, we are proud to present an innovative and practical solution for mushroom identification. While others lean toward digital formats, apps and artificial intelligence, we believe the foraging experience should remain screen-free. Instead of creating another app, we sought to add value to a physical book. Although our focus is leather goods and design in general, we wanted to bring this concept to completion and make it available to the public.
We set out to address key challenges faced by foragers and enthusiasts alike and focused on the following pain-points:
A side-by-side comparison system for accurate identification.
An intuitive algorithm to filter mushrooms into groups, building confidence in 100% identification rather than just "close enough."
A book that can be easily updated with new information—without purchasing a completely new edition.
Durable materials that withstand outdoor conditions like rain, dirt, and wear.
A customizable order of pages, allowing users to arrange the book based on their foraging goals.
A fully analog system featuring high-definition photos with detailed, zoomed-in detail views to enhance the experience.
A realistic color palette representing true-to-life hues, rather than vague verbal descriptions open to interpretation.
Lightweight and easy to pack with a strong focus on encouragement to explore the forest, deepen ecological understanding, and foster connections with nature, family, and friends.

A Thoughtfully Designed System
Our card system allows for quick filtering and comparison of a large amount of information at a glance.
Durability
Made from UV-treated, weather-resistant plastic, the pages are built to withstand the elements. The book is water-resistant—simply wipe it clean after a trip.
Customizable Layout
A removable rivet enables users to reorder pages according to their needs, such as organizing by risk level or local growth patterns. We've initially arranged the book based on hymenophore groupings for intuitive reference.
Continuous Updates
Unlike traditional mushroom guides, our system remains current. We can send revised pages for you to swap in, ensuring your book always contains the latest information. Future expansions will include expert-level mushroom packs.
Personalization
Blank pages in the back provide space for personal notes, sketches, and observations. Whether you're mapping out new foraging spots or jotting down thoughts from the forest, a 2B graphite pencil is recommended—easy to erase and resistant to rain.
Local Production
We are proud to source and manufacture this product entirely within Europe, right here in Umeå. By overseeing the design and production process, we ensure high quality while keeping costs reasonable for end users. Our goal is not just to sell a product but to build a platform that supports sustainable innovation in foraging tools. Future expansions include improved foraging knives, baskets, and additional mushroom identification resources.

The Science Behind the Colors
Color perception varies among individuals, making accurate representation essential. To counteract inconsistencies, we developed a method that samples hues under different lighting conditions, applies an average blur, and refines the final tone. This results in a color palette that closely matches real-life specimens.
